Final-minute equalizer rewards Lakers pressure
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the 39th minute and held that lead for most of the afternoon. Clayton State continued to create chances, finishing with a 12–6 advantage in shots and seven corner kicks. The Lakers outshot the Lions 7–3 after halftime.
Claire Smith made three saves without conceding during her time in goal, while Rubie Kelley recorded one save. Clayton State finished its nonconference schedule 3–2–2. The Lakers are scheduled to visit North Georgia on October 24 at 2:30 p.m., returning their attention to Peach Belt Conference competition.
GSB Take
Clayton State’s persistence deserved attention even before the equalizer arrived. Creating pressure is useful, but converting it before the final minute would give the Lakers more control over games like this one. Vargas supplied the decisive touch that turned an otherwise frustrating afternoon into a result the team could carry into its next conference test.
