The Kennesaw State Owls lost 27–26 to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Oct. 7 at Walens Family Field at Fifth Third Stadium. The result left Kennesaw State 1–4 overall and 0–1 in Conference USA. Jacksonville State improved to 4–2 overall and 2–0 in league play after a tense finish in Kennesaw.

Rickie Collins completed 24 of 34 passes for 293 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Brayden Munroe caught seven passes for 159 yards, including a 70-yard reception. Kennesaw State’s ability to create gains through the air kept the offense competitive throughout the conference opener.

The Owls led 16–14 at halftime and extended that advantage to 23–14 late in the third quarter. Jacksonville State answered with a touchdown before the period ended and later moved ahead 24–23. The changing score made the final quarter a test of both teams’ ability to finish possessions under pressure.

Daniel Kinney’s 28-yard field goal put Kennesaw State back in front 26–24 in the fourth quarter. Jacksonville State then used its final scoring drive to set up Garrison Rippa’s winning 33-yard field goal. Rob Billings IV intercepted Collins on the Owls’ last possession, preventing another response.

Tywon Christopher led Kennesaw State with 15 tackles, including two tackles for loss, and forced a fumble. The Owls were also penalized 15 times for 137 yards, a costly total in a one-point game. Those penalties provide a concrete focus for improvement even with several productive individual performances.

Kennesaw State next visits the Missouri State Bears in Springfield, Missouri, on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with the game televised by CBS Sports Network. The Owls will try to translate their recent competitiveness into a first conference victory after consecutive narrow defeats.

GSB Take

The passing connection between Collins and Munroe gave Kennesaw State enough offense to contend for this win. A one-point loss with 137 penalty yards also makes discipline an immediate concern. The Owls need fewer self-inflicted setbacks so that productive stretches become finished victories rather than another close result.
