Georgia Climbs to No. 1 in AP Poll After Alabama Win

October 12, 2026 · College, Division I, Football, Georgia

Georgia Climbs to No. 1 in AP Poll After Alabama Win headline with a metallic number one, empty football stadium and www.georgiasportsblog.com.

The Georgia Bulldogs moved to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 released October 11 after defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide 20–17. Georgia received 66 of the poll’s 70 first-place votes and 1,745 points. The Bulldogs also claimed the top spot in the Coaches Poll, according to Georgia’s October 12 game notes.

Georgia entered the Alabama game ranked second and left Tuscaloosa with a 6–0 overall record and a 4–0 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Former No. 1 Texas lost 27–24 to Oklahoma and dropped to seventh in the AP rankings. Alabama remained sixth despite suffering its first loss of the season.

The latest poll placed Notre Dame second, Miami third, Ohio State fourth and Indiana fifth. Georgia’s move gave the Bulldogs their first No. 1 ranking since September 2024, a return confirmed in the school’s official Auburn preview. The Bulldogs began the 2026 season third before spending the next five weeks in the second spot.

Saturday’s result gave voters a stronger road test to evaluate than Georgia’s earlier wins. The Bulldogs outgained Alabama 455–346 and held the Crimson Tide to 17 points after Alabama entered the matchup averaging 49.6 points per game. Georgia also recovered from a halftime deficit and finished the game with defensive stops and a clock-draining offensive possession.

The production through six games provides context for Georgia’s position. The Bulldogs have scored 277 points and allowed 84, giving them an average of about 46.2 points scored and 14.0 allowed per game. Georgia’s official notes identify the 277 points as the program’s highest total through the first six games of a season.

The ranking does not change the next assignment on the schedule. Georgia hosts the Auburn Tigers on October 17 at Sanford Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern. Auburn brings a 3–2 overall record and a 1–2 conference record into the rivalry after an open week.

The Bulldogs will also have to manage the expectations that follow an unbeaten record and a top ranking. A poll position reflects what voters have seen so far, while conference standings and the postseason picture will continue to change with each result. Georgia’s most useful response is another complete performance against an opponent that has had additional time to prepare.

GSB Take

Georgia earned the top ranking by surviving the kind of road game that separates contenders from teams with impressive early scores. The Alabama win showed that the Bulldogs could solve problems when their normal scoring pace slowed. Carrying that standard into the Auburn game matters more than the number beside Georgia’s name this week.
