Atlanta United FC lost 3–1 to FC Cincinnati on Oct. 10 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The teams were scoreless at halftime before Cincinnati scored three times after the break. Miguel Almirón briefly brought Atlanta level, but the visitors’ late finishing determined the Eastern Conference matchup.
Kévin Denkey opened the scoring for Cincinnati in the 52nd minute. The goal changed a match in which Atlanta had produced promising passing sequences without finding a first-half breakthrough. Atlanta then needed to turn its buildup into a response while protecting itself against the visitors’ forward runs.
Almirón equalized in the 69th minute after combining with Breel Embolo. Cincinnati’s official game report credited Embolo and Tomás Jacob with assists on the goal. It was Embolo’s first assist for Atlanta and gave the home side renewed hope of securing a result.
Tom Barlow restored Cincinnati’s lead in the 84th minute. Denkey added his second goal in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time as Atlanta searched for another equalizer. The timing of those goals made the final stretch especially costly after the 5-Stripes had recovered to 1–1.
Jay Fortune made his 86th appearance for Atlanta, setting the club record for appearances by a Homegrown player. Almirón also continued his production following the World Cup break, with the club listing five goals and three assists during that period. Those individual positives did not resolve the team’s need to defend decisive moments more effectively.
Atlanta next visits CF Montréal on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Stade Saputo, giving the team a quick opportunity to respond away from home. The immediate challenge is preserving the useful attacking combinations while avoiding another late defensive setback.
GSB Take
Atlanta showed it could construct attacks and find an equalizer, but that work lost value when the final minutes turned against it. The connection between Almirón and Embolo gives the offense something to develop. A stronger response in Montréal needs to include defensive control after Atlanta creates or concedes a goal.
