The Georgia State Panthers return from an open week to visit the unbeaten James Madison Dukes on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET in Harrisonburg, Virginia, with coverage on ESPNU. Georgia State enters 4–1 overall and 1–0 in the Sun Belt Conference, while James Madison is 6–0 and 3–0.

The Panthers last played on Oct. 3, when they beat the Old Dominion Monarchs 42–10 in Atlanta. Their first five games produced 197 points, an average of 39.4 per contest. Georgia State has allowed 95 points over that span, giving the team a substantial scoring advantage before this road challenge.

Georgia State’s official preview lists 468.6 yards of total offense per game. That output includes 259 passing yards and 209.6 rushing yards per contest. The balance gives quarterback Cameran Brown and the offense multiple ways to attack, although maintaining it against an unbeaten conference opponent is the next test.

The Panthers have converted 34 of 67 third-down chances, or 50.7 percent. Sustaining that efficiency would help prevent James Madison from dictating the game through possession. Early-down gains matter because they can preserve Georgia State’s ability to choose between the run and pass on third down.

James Madison’s latest win came by a 27–24 score at Georgia Southern on Oct. 10. The Dukes erased a 10–6 halftime deficit and converted four of five fourth-down attempts. Those results show why Georgia State needs to finish defensive possessions even when it earns an initial advantage.

The Harrisonburg trip begins consecutive road games for Georgia State, with a visit to the Arkansas State Red Wolves scheduled for Oct. 24. A victory this week would also give the Panthers their second conference win in as many league games. The immediate task is converting a strong five-game statistical start into a disciplined performance away from home.

GSB Take

Georgia State’s scoring balance and third-down success give this matchup substance beyond the difference in records. The Panthers should treat James Madison’s late-down persistence as a reason to remain aggressive through the end of each possession. A complete road performance would provide a more useful measure of Georgia State’s conference potential than its season averages alone.
