Jay Fortune became Atlanta United FC’s all-time leader in appearances by a Homegrown player on Oct. 10. The midfielder made his 86th first-team appearance against FC Cincinnati at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He moved past Caleb Wiley after the two Academy products had been tied at 85 appearances.
Fortune had matched Wiley’s total in the Sept. 26 game against New York City FC. He scored Atlanta’s 75th-minute equalizer in that 2–2 draw, giving the milestone appearance an immediate on-field contribution. The Cincinnati match then moved him into sole possession of the club record.
His path began with Atlanta’s Academy, which he joined in 2018. Fortune progressed through the youth teams before making his professional debut with Atlanta United 2 in 2020. That progression gives the appearance record a development story extending beyond his time in the MLS first team.
Fortune signed a Homegrown contract in July 2022 that became effective in January 2023. His MLS debut followed in March 2023 against Charlotte FC. He later scored his first MLS goal at Charlotte in August 2024, providing the winner in a 1–0 Atlanta victory.
Atlanta strengthened its commitment to Fortune with an August 2026 contract extension. The agreement runs through the 2028–29 season and includes an option for 2029–30. The extension and appearance milestone together show that the club is investing in a player who has already established a sustained first-team role.
Fortune’s record came during a 3–1 loss to Cincinnati rather than a team celebration built around a victory. Atlanta next visits CF Montréal on Oct. 14 as it seeks a response to that result. The midfielder’s continued development will be measured by both his growing appearance total and the contributions he makes in those matches.
GSB Take
Fortune’s record offers a concrete example of Atlanta’s Academy producing a lasting first-team contributor. His recent equalizer against New York City also shows why the milestone has value beyond longevity. The club’s next challenge is ensuring that this individual progress supports more consistent results for the entire team.
