The Mercer Bears men’s soccer team lost 2–0 to the Wofford Terriers on Oct. 9 at Betts Stadium in Macon. The Southern Conference result left Mercer 0–9–3 overall and 0–3–1 in league play. Wofford improved to 7–3–3 overall and 2–0–1 in the conference after scoring both goals in the second half.
The teams reached halftime without a goal, with Mercer creating early pressure through corner kicks. Noah Bright put the Bears’ first shot on target in the 18th minute. Goalkeeper Henry Hampshaw saved Wofford’s two first-half shots on goal to keep the match level through the break.
An own goal at 52:02 gave Wofford the lead. Declan Mettee added the Terriers’ second goal at 81:51, with Clemens Astrup credited with the assist. Mercer could not produce a scoring response after the match shifted away from its first-half stalemate.
Mercer’s official recap reported three red cards for the Bears during the second half. The disciplinary sequence made an already difficult comeback more complicated. It also gives the program a clear issue to address alongside the need to create more sustained attacking opportunities.
Hampshaw finished with nine saves, including seven after halftime. Wofford held a 17–7 advantage in total shots and a 10–1 edge in shots on goal. Those totals show the pressure Mercer faced and the limited number of attempts that tested the opposing goalkeeper.
The match was the fourth annual Baba Agbaje Memorial Game, honoring the former Mercer player who died in 2023. The Bears next visit the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with a 6 p.m. ET kickoff listed on the official schedule. Mercer then returns home to face the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Oct. 17 as it continues seeking its first victory.
GSB Take
Hampshaw’s saves kept the final margin manageable, but Mercer needs a broader response than strong goalkeeping. More shots on target and better discipline would reduce the pressure on a team still looking for a win. The next two matches provide a chance to turn those priorities into visible progress on the field.
